Meeting A Genuine Need

The Foothills Humane Society, Inc. is a private, nonprofit organization supported by

individual donations, adoption fees, fundraising activities and bequests. No government

funds are provided for the construction or operation of this shelter. We are dedicated to

sheltering stray, homeless and abandoned animals, and to placing healthy animals in

appropriate homes. The Society also provides financial assistance to people in need

through it's spay and neuter program. We also provide programs for educating the public

in responsible pet ownership.

How It All Began

In it's infancy a small band of dedicated volunteers struggled to do what they could utilizing

halfway houses and caring, willing citizens. Daisy Hill Kennel in Campobello was leased to

manage our shelter for five years. In 1987, anticipating an eventual shelter of our own in

Polk County, Arthur Farwell donated to FHS eleven acres adjoining the Tryon Hounds Kennel on

Little Mountain Road. This property was eminently suited as a site for our dream - a shelter

owned and operated by the Society. The Foothills Humane Society went to the public

for memberships and donations to construct the new facility, but above all, worked

at various projects to earn money. It still does. Starting with a nest egg of $800 , and the

generosity of caring local citizens, the Society was able to construct a prototype shelter

of which we can all be proud. This was accomplished without any loans or mortgages on

the property. Several years after the shelter was up and running, it became apparent to us

that a crematorium was going to become mandatory for the success of our operation.

This was accomplished, again totally with donations, and is operated for the convenience

and benefit of private citizens.
